How do I track student progress in Moodle?

Moodle has several tools that can be used to track different aspects of student progress within a course.
Grades - the Moodle Gradebook where you can record and calculate students grades.
Activity completion - this provides a checkbox beside each activity on the main course page which can automatic (or manually) mark when the activity is completed. Instructors can see an overview of all completed/uncompleted activities for all students.
Course reports - several reports are available to the instructor to help them track the progress of their students. These include activity reports, participation reports, and general course logs.
