How do I set up the Gradebook in Moodle?

Answer

The Moodle gradebook is a great tool for tracking progress and giving students information about their performance in class. Moodle offers several built-in options for calculating the Course total grade. For ease of use, we highly recommend selecting one of the options provided. Alternatively, instructors can create a formula to calculate their grades.

Moodle refers to grade calculations as "aggregations." The three most commonly used aggregation methods are:

  • Weighted mean of grades - This method allows the instructor to create weighted categories. For example, a Quiz category that is weighted at 40%, and Assignment category weighted at 40%, and a Final Exam weighted at 20%.
  • Simple weighted mean of grades - This method calculates an average of all grades with each grade being weighted based on its maximum point value. For example, a 10-point Quiz would be weighted at 10% of the value of a 100-point Final Exam.
  • Natural - This method is basically a sum of points for all grade items; adding up a point total for the course.

NOTE: Moodle calculates everything based on percentages, so every grade is handled as a percentage of points earned relative to the total possible points for the item.
