Can I use a Points system in my Moodle Gradebook?

Answer

Yes, you can use a points system in the Moodle Gradebook. The function of summing up total points is one of the automated Aggregation (calculation) methods included in the Gradebook.

To set up your Gradebook to add up total points, do the following:

  1. Go to the Gradebook. (Click Grades in the lefthand menu on the main course page.*)
  2. Click the Setup tab at the top of the Gradebook.
  3. Click the first Edit link (unbolded) in the Actions menu to the right, and select Edit settings from the dropdown menu. This allows you to edit the Course total column.
  4. In the Aggregation dropdown menu, select "Natural."  Do not make any other changes on this screen.
  5. Click Save changes at the bottom of the screen.

On the Setup screen, your Course total column will now display the total number of points that are currently available in the Gradebook. You will also see a column of Weights. These are there to show you how the items are valued in relation to each other. Do not touch these unless you want to change how something is valued--for example, if you don't want an item to count towards the total, you can check the box and type 0 as the weight.

*If you do not see the lefthand menu, click the three stacked lines icon at the top left corner of your Moodle course screen to toggle the menu on.
