How can I Weight my Grades in Moodle?
Answer
In the Moodle gradebook, you can weight your grades and/or grade categories by selecting "Weighted mean of grades" as your overall grade "aggregation" (automated calculation). This will allow you to weight individual categories and items - for example, a Quiz category that is weighted at 40%, and Assignment category weighted at 40%, and a Final Exam weighted at 20%.
You can select your grade aggregation as follows:
- Go to your Gradebook in Moodle (click Grades in the lefthand menu on you main course page).
- On the Gradebook screen click the Setup tab at the top.
- Click the first Edit link under in the Actions column on the right, and select Edit settings from the dropdown menu. This allows you to edit the settings for the Course total column.
- Select Weighted mean of grades as the Aggregation.
5. Click Save changes at the bottom of the page. You should now see a Weights column on the Gradebook setup screen.
6. You can type weights for categories (such as the Interactives category above at 40%) and/or for individual items (such as the Exam above at 10%). Moodle does not let you know if you do not have weights equaling 100%, so be sure to double-check that your totals equal 100.
NOTE: If you do not want to include an item or category in your overall course grade, you can set its weight to 0.
